Book Covers for Feminist Artists of the 20th Century
Project Type: Book Cover Design
Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator + Adobe Photoshop + Adobe InDesign
Year: Spring 2020
I created Book Covers for Feminist Artists of the 20th Century in my Graphic Design II class. In this project, I explored book cover design for a series, illustration, and typography.

For this project, I was tasked with designing three different book covers for a single made-up series related to a social- and arts-related topic. I chose to build my series around feminist artists of the 20th century due to my knowledge of and interest in art history. Each book of my series is about a different artist; Faith Ringgold, Firelei Báez, and Judy Chicago. To begin this project, I researched these artists and the information to be included on the book covers. I then began brainstorming illustrative ways to showcase three different artists under one concept so my book covers would work cohesively together. Knowing I wanted to highlight each individual artist and their artwork, I went with my idea of the main illustrative component being their silhouette filled with a close-up textural photo of one of their artworks. The photo would also fill in the letters of their name and a portion of the back covers. The elements on the book cover not filled in with artwork are all one color pulled from the artwork. I made this choice, along with picking a clean and simple sans-serif typeface, to keep the attention on the artist and artwork because they are the subjects of the books within my series.
